Mack and Mabel
starring David Soul & Janie Dee
Mon 30 Jan - Sat 4 February 2006
Monday - Saturday 7.30pm Thursday & Saturday 2.00pm
Mack and Mabel reunites David Soul (Jerry in the multi-award winning West End musical, Jerry Springer The Opera/TV's Starsky & Hutch) with Janie Dee (National Theatre's Carousel, West End/Tour My One and Only).
Out of the Silent Movie era and the heady heights of 1920s Hollywood, Mack and Mabel tells the heart-wrenching love story of two of its greatest legends; director Mack Sennett “The King of Comedy” and his star, comedienne Mabel Normand.
When ‘hash-slinger’ Mabel Normand turns up on the set of film-maker Mack Sennett, creator of the Keystone Cops, she catches his eye and soon captures his heart. Before long, Mabel is starring in Sennett’s two-reelers and together they bring magic to the silver screen. Yet ambition, dalliance and the impending threat of changing times make for a tempestuous relationship. Romance turns to jealousy while stardom foreshadows scandal and heartbreak. But despite the odds, this inimitable pair can never escape the undeniability of their love for each other.
Michael Stewart’s enthralling book, Jerry Herman’s extraordinary score (Hello Dolly, Mame, and La Cage Aux Folles) and John Doyle’s inventive direction combine to produce an astonishingly fresh musical while featuring some of Broadway’s most enduring songs – Big Time, Look What Happened to Mabel, I Won’t Send Roses, Time Heals Everything, Hundreds of Girls, and Tap Your Troubles Away.
Mack and Mabel reunites the same creative team whose uniquely imaginative production of Sweeney Todd beguiled West End audiences and critics alike and which opened on Broadway in September, 2005.
