The Sacrifice
James MacMillan
Wed 24 October 2007
7.15pm
The Sacrifice is a compelling and timeless story of a ruler's ultimate sacrifice to safeguard the future of his wartorn, faction-ridden country. Composed and conducted by one of the world's greatest living composers, James MacMillan, The Sacrifice is directed by Katie Mitchell, with a libretto by the award-winning poet Michael Symmons Roberts. This is a story of love, revenge and reconcilliation, inspired by the heightened mythical world of The Mabinogion: a collection of ancient Welsh folktales.
The powerful cast reunites a number of artists who have received great acclaim for their recent roles with WNO - and internationally: Christopher Purves (title role in Wozzeck and Sharpless in Madam Butterfly); Sarah Tynan (who created the role of Iphis in Jephtha and performed Melanto in Ulysses); Peter Hoare (Captain in Wozzeck and the Witch in Hansel and Gretel) as well as Lisa Milne and Leigh Melrose.
Sung in English with English surtitles
