Outstanding show, Tony (Dan) & Maria (Hazel?) have amazing voices, absolutely first class. After every show I see at The Mayflower I think that has to be the best I've seen, but this surpasses them all. Many congratulations to all the cast, musicians, and production team. Truly brilliant, well deserving of the standing ovation. Liz, Phil & mother-in-law. >'x'<

Everyone and everything on stage was absolutely, outstandingly, superb and the orchestra was wonderful.
The original creators of West Side Story - Leonard Bernstein, Jerome Robbins, Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim would have been really pleased

A quite marvellous evening - most struck by the YOUTH of the cast. So rarely does one get a perfect combination of lighting, sound, production et al. This West Side Story has it all - good luck to this amazingly youthful cast.

Great spectacle, good dancing, lighting and set, Toni's voice marvellous, although he's a very bad mover, Maria's much less so.
BUT - We couldn't hear any of the words, most especially in spoken dialogue, and very often in the songs as well, (in "America" so much was lost), with the exception of Officer Crumky. This was very disappointing and was reflected in quite a silent audience who were straining to hear the words. The cast may have noticed that the jokes and wordplay did not get much reaction. Now you know why. This is unforgivable in the theatre.
I bet you won't publish this.

What a wonderful antidote to the snowy weather. Brilliant dancing, choreography and direction. Tony's voice was perfect. So glad I went.

I saw the 50th anniversary production at Sadlers Wells, London last August, with the American cast. Sofia Escobar (Maria) is the only member of that company to be seen in this touring version. Miss Escobar was as superb in the role here as she was then. Although I enjoyed the show at the Mayflower, in my humble opinion the dancing from this British company was not as good as that of the Americans.
The same can be said of any show originating in the States,eg, A Chorus Line at Drury Lane in its first six months was brilliant. When the British cast took over, it was some time before it reached anything like the style of the original.
I can only put it down to the teaching methods which produces on the other side of the Atlantic, dancers who have electricity, strength and incredible vigour coursing through their bodies at every performance.
Having said all of that, I did enjoy the performance (I feel that Howard Jones-(Riff) could do with a bit more singing coaching).
Certainly the audience at that matinee performance enjoyed the show.
PS: One further point, doesn't the sell out houses for the this show illustrate the difference between this and the musical pantomime offered this last Christmas. Please, next Christmas either have a big bold panto with really, really top notch names, or another big hitting show like Wizard of Oz or White Christmas.
