Merry Widow

Tue 29 Nov & Thu 1 December 2005

7.15pm Sung in English Pre-Performance Talk:
29 Nov 6.15pm

A story of romance, passion, high society and amorous intrigue, The Merry Widow is set in the heady champagne days of decadent, nineteenth century Paris. Be among the first to experience Welsh National Opera's brand new production with Lesley Garrett in the title role in The Merry Widow's centenary year. Melodic and amusing, this dazzling operetta is brimming with glorious music, soaring voices, sensuous waltzes and glittering Parisian couture.

Since its first performance in 1905 at Theater an der Wien, Vienna, The Merry Widow has continued to delight audiences with its intoxicating whirl of elegant ladies, eligible bachelors, ever-flowing champagne and suitors seeking the coveted hand of rich widow Hanna Glawari.

A birthday party for the Crown Prince of Pontevedro is in full swing. Wealthy Hanna is surrounded by suitors - to the despair of the Baron, who fears she will bankrupt their country if she marries a foreigner. He convinces Danilo, a Pontevedrian playboy to woo her. While Hanna lavishes special attention on him, he feigns indifference - until she announces her engagement to a Frenchman. But this is operetta, and a crisis is averted in the nick of time.

The Merry Widow has one interval between Act 1 and Act 2 and then a scene change between Act 2 and Act 3.

This is a traditional opera.
