MICHELLE RYAN TO STAR ALONGSIDE WILL YOUNG
Fri 25 May 2012
COMES TO THE MAYFLOWER THEATRE
PRIOR TO MAKING WEST END MUSICAL THEATRE DEBUT ALONGSIDE WILL YOUNG
BILL KENWRIGHT PRESENTS
RUFUS NORRIS’ ACCLAIMED PRODUCTION OF KANDER AND EBB’S MUSICAL MASTERPIECE
Michelle Ryan will play Sally Bowles in Rufus Norris’ double Olivier-award winning production of CABARET this autumn. She will star alongside internationally renowned singer/songwriter Will Young who, as previously announced, will play the enigmatic Emcee. The production will open at The Mayflower Theatre on 3 September for a week as part of an exclusive four week tour prior to a West End run.
Michelle first won the nation’s hearts with her gripping performance as Zoe Slater in EastEnders, which she played for five years; and after an exhaustive search by NBC producers in 2007, Michelle famously beat a host of Hollywood names to play the title role in the re-imagining of cult US TV show The Bionic Woman. Since then Michelle has appeared in some of Britain’s most popular television dramas including Mansfield Park alongside Billy Piper, Jekyll opposite James Nesbitt, as well as starring roles in Miss Marple, Merlin and Doctor Who. Her film appearances include a host of contemporary British films such as Cleanskin, alongside Sean Bean, and Huge directed by comedian Ben Miller. Other credits include Cashback, I Want Candy, 4,3,2,1 written and directed by Noel Clarke, and the forthcoming film The Man Inside, written and directed by Dan Turner.
CABARET features show-stopping choreography, dazzling costumes and some of the most iconic songs in musical theatre including Money Makes The World Go Round, Two Ladies, Maybe This Time and of course Cabaret. The production turns Weimar Berlin of 1931 into a sassy, sizzling haven of decadence. And at its dark heart are the notorious Emcee and sassy Sally Bowles, who perform nightly at the infamous Kit Kat Klub.
Since its Broadway premiere in 1966 and the famous movie version with Oscar winners Liza Minnelli and Joel Grey, CABARET has won a staggering number of stage and screen awards including 8 Oscar’s, 7 BAFTA’s and 13 Tony’s.
Rufus Norris is a multi-award winning theatre, opera and film director whose most recent production at the National Theatre, where he is associate director, was the acclaimed Critic’s Circle Award Winning Musical London Road. Other theatre includes Vernon God Little (Young Vic), Les Liaisons Dangerouses (Broadway), Festen (West End and Broadway) The Country Girl (Apollo) and Afore Night Came (Young Vic, Evening Standard Award). Featuring Tim Roth, Cillian Murphy, Rory Kinnear, and original music by Damon Albarn, his debut feature film Broken based on the novel by Hedge End author Daniel Clay opened the prestigious Critics’ Week at the Cannes film festival. It was produced by Cuba Pictures, BBC Films, Lypsync and Bill Kenwright.
Choreography is by the Olivier award winning Javier De Frutos. In 1990, he formed The Javier De Frutos Dance Company. His work includes The Hypochondriac Bird and Affliction of Loneliness. Recently he joined forces with Sadler’s Wells and The Pet Shop Boys to create a brand new dance work based on Hans Christian Andersen’s story, The Most Incredible Thing.
