Mayflower Theatre brings new World Class Dance company to Southampton in 2014
The Mayflower Theatre will be presenting two shows from the world-class dance company, Northern Ballet in May 2014 as part of its new programming. Under the Artistic Direction of David Nixon OBE Northern Ballet has an established reputation for creating high quality and inspirational new full-length ballets and for touring these to towns and cities across the UK. Northern Ballet’s 40 classical dancers and 27-strong Sinfonia perform to more than 120,000 people across the UK each year and now audiences in Southampton can experience for themselves the talents of this extraordinary award-winning company.
Michael Ockwell, Mayflower Theatre Chief Executive said, “I set out in our new artistic vision to provide a programme of events that is wide-ranging and eclectic which involved bringing the finest dance companies to the south. I am thrilled to announce that the fantastic Northern Ballet will be added to the programme of shows for 2014 with their version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream from 28 - 31 May and a children’s production of Three Little Pigs on Friday 30 May. I look forward to developing a strong partnership with Northern Ballet to bring more of their original productions for our audiences to enjoy and to complement the wonderful dance we already offer.”
Mark Skipper DL, Northern Ballet Chief Executive added, “We are delighted to announce the addition of this major new venue on the South Coast to our national tour. As a company we are committed to reaching the widest possible audiences. This new venue gives us a real opportunity to extend that reach. The Mayflower is home to a wide variety of fantastic productions and we look forward to adding to the dance provision the theatre offers its audiences. We hope to captivate and inspire audiences with our much loved production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and that this will be the beginning of a long relationship with the theatre and the city of Southampton.”
Northern Ballet’s Olivier Award nominated A Midsummer Night’s Dream sees the romantic antics of a touring dance company played out on one magical night as the company travels by sleeper train from London to Edinburgh.
It’s the final rehearsal and emotions run high as artistic temperaments clash with romantic entanglements. The time comes to leave for Edinburgh but the tensions continue on board the train and as the Company settle down for the night, the train enters a tunnel and the dream begins.
The Company will also be bringing the classic fairy-tale Three Little Pigs to life; the show is a perfect opportunity to introduce little ones to the magic of ballet, music and theatre. Each child friendly performance lasts approximately 40 minutes.
