Earl Carpenter, Patron of Mayflower Musical Youth Theatre

Earl Carpenter has more than 20 years’ experience in the musical theatre industry and has played principal and title roles in a number of shows
including the 25th anniversary touring production of The Phantom Of The Opera, We Will Rock You, Evita and the original 25th anniversary
touring production of Les Misérables.

Michael Ockwell, Mayflower Theatre chief executive said: ‘Earl is one of the most experienced performers who started out his career in local
amateur productions in Bournemouth and Southampton, and is the perfect inspiration for all the young people who are members of the youth
theatre. It would be amazing to think that some of these young people will be as successful in their careers as Earl and return one day to
lead a company in a show on Mayflower Theatre’s stage.’

Earl said: ‘...Having this platform to impart what I’ve learnt about the musical theatre industry over the last 20 plus years and with
Mayflower Theatre supporting youth theatre as it does, this is a great opportunity and I look forward to achieving what this honour dictates.’

Mayflower Musical Youth Theatre is for young people aged 10 – 18yrs with a passion for theatre. Our programme gives you the opportunity to develop your skills in singing, dancing & acting in a fun and friendly environment.

As well as the weekly meetings there are regular opportunities linked to our main house programme to see shows and take part in other events.

Over the year all participants are supported to gain an Arts Award. These are accredited awards that focus on developing artistic skills and knowledge of the arts world.

Mayflower Musical Youth Theatre has grown every year and we are building on that success this year to bring you the best possible offer!

Mayflower Musical Youth Theatre consist of three groups:

Limelights: School years 6-7 | Tuesdays 6.00pm-7.45pm
Footlights: School years 8-9 | Tuesdays 7.45pm-9.30pm
Spotlights: School and college years 10-13 | Mondays 6.00pm-7.45pm

Each of these groups performs in the community at least once in the year and shows back a small selection of work for parents/guardians once a term.

Each group focuses on developing acting, singing and dance skills. We also give opportunities throughout the year linked to the visiting companies that form Mayflower Theatre’s programme.

This coming year we will link the work in sessions with British Legion’s Remembrance Service, Shrek, Wessex Heartbeat Variety Show, Jersey Boys, Horrible Histories, Pepperland, Great Gatsby, Bodyguard and Matilda.

We meet at Richard Taunton Sixth Form College on Hill Lane.

In addition to these exciting opportunities, the members of Mayflower Musical Youth Theatre will get a chance to audition to be a part of our annual production. The production will take place during May half term and will rehearse on Thursday evenings, separately from the regular sessions. This means that if you are in the production you also come to the regular sessions so that you don’t miss any opportunities! Auditions to get into the production will be held towards the end of the autumn term. This year we will be presenting Little Shop of Horrors at Solent University on Friday 31 May and Saturday 1 June.

Standard Pricing - £180 per participant per term

We are pleased to announce that there are £90 bursary places available on application. These must be applied for every term and are not guaranteed for the whole year. These can be awarded on a financial or talent basis. Applicants applying for a bursary should complete their application four weeks before term starting accompanied by a deposit payment of £90.00. Matilda The Musical Announcement

We are excited to announce that we will be working with The RSC to stage and perform an edited 45 minute scratch version of Matilda The Musical on Thursday 18 July. This is a unique opportunity as The RSC have not yet released a Junior version of Matilda generally for performance by Youth theatres.

The project is open to everyone at MMYT and everyone wishing to take part will be able to be in the company. We will be auditioning for principal roles during our regular sessions and casting before rehearsals begin after the May Half term. We are aware that some of you have a very busy summer term coming up with school/college commitments so there is opportunity to choose to take part in the chorus only and therefore lessen your commitment and need to work on your role outside of the rehearsals.

Rehearsals are Thursday evenings from 6 June – 18 July at Itchen College with additional sessions on Saturday 15 June, Saturday 6 July and on the evening of Wednesday 17 July.  A detailed rehearsal schedule will be available nearer the time but principals can expect to be needed most weeks, chorus members will certainly not be required every week.

You must be a member of MMYT for the summer term and available for all the dates to be involved in our Matilda Company. A registration form will be emailed at the start of the Summer Term.

This is a fantastic opportunity and we look forward to working with you on this amazing show.
