Synopsis

Following 8 record-breaking years in London’s West End and having played in 11 countries around the world to over 7 million people, the National Theatre’s acclaimed play War Horse will return to Southampton in Spring 2018.

At the outbreak of World War One, Joey, young Albert’s beloved horse, is sold to the Cavalry and shipped to France. He’s soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man’s land. Albert, who remained on his parents’ Devon farm, cannot forget Joey. Though still not old enough to enlist he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home.

Based on the beloved novel by Michael Morpurgo, this powerfully moving and imaginative drama, filled with stirring music and songs, is a show of phenomenal inventiveness. At its heart are astonishing life-sized horses by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to thrilling life on stage.

War Horse is an unforgettable theatrical event which takes audiences on an extraordinary journey from the fields of rural Devon to the trenches of First World War France.

We are delighted to be presenting a Relaxed Performance of War Horse on Thu 24 May at 1.30pm.

A Relaxed Performance is specifically designed to welcome people who will benefit from a more relaxed performance environment, including people on the autism spectrum, with sensory and communication difficulties, or a learning disability. There is a relaxed attitude to noise and movement and some small changes may be made to the light and sound effects.

War Horse CPD Training

23 May | 4.30pm - 6.30pm | Training/Workshop | Running Time: 2 hours | FREE

Join us at Mayflower Theatre on Wednesday 23 May from 4.30pm - 6.30pm for a FREE CPD training workshop linked with the National Theatre’s acclaimed production of War Horse. 

Drawing on rehearsal room processes, this workshop will introduce practical strategies for exploring the puppetry in War Horse with your students. You will receive hands-on teaching on how to create characters through puppetry and physicality. This workshop will be run by the Associate Puppetry Director of War Horse.

War Horse Puppetry Workshop

This FREE workshop is designed to give children a hands-on understanding of how to create characters through puppetry and physicality; the workshops give a taste of the devising process through which the War Horse horses come to life.

We have created an exciting War Horse workshop, exploring the themes of World War I as well as creating your own puppets and learning of the puppetry techniques. These workshops can be accessed by KS2-KS4 and available from May to 20 July in your own school setting.
