From Dream to Degree: Jade’s Journey

When Jade first stepped into her school drama club, she discovered more than a hobby — she found her calling. Growing up in a low-income household meant theatre classes weren’t an option, but thanks to an inspiring teacher who started a drama club, Jade spent nearly a decade nurturing her love for performance.

That passion led her to audition for Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, one of the UK’s most prestigious drama schools, with thousands of applicants each year. When she was offered a place, the excitement was overwhelming… until the reality of the cost set in.

That’s when Mayflower’s Higher Education Tuition Fee Grant and the Lord Montagu Bursary (also available through Mayflower) changed everything. With £9,000 of support, Jade was able to secure her place at Mountview, a dream she once feared might slip away.

‘”The weight off my shoulders was incredible. My confidence has skyrocketed. Instead of worrying about funding, I can focus on training, learning, and becoming the artist I want to be.”

Now surrounded by talented peers, Jade initially felt daunted but is now flourishing, her confidence growing, her creativity expanding. While her dream remains to one day perform on the West End, she’s also discovering new possibilities: writing, production, even directing.

Her message to other aspiring students is clear:
“Please apply. We need more people from low-income households. The arts should be a level playing field.”

At Mayflower, we believe every young person deserves the chance to pursue their passion in the arts regardless of background. That’s why we’re proud to fund futures through our bursaries and grants.
