Theatre as a luxury

We understand that right now, with everything going on in the world, life feels heavier. With the rising cost of living, everyday decisions carry more weight, and what were once simple pleasures can begin to feel out of reach. Theatre can seem like a luxury, and we recognise that reality with honesty and empathy.

But theatre has always been more than just a night out.

It’s the moment the lights dim and the world outside fades away. It’s the swell of music that gives you goosebumps, the laughter you didn’t know you needed, the tears that catch you by surprise. It’s the stories that remind us of who we are and who we could be.

Nowadays, these moments of escape aren’t indulgent; they’re essential. They give us space to breathe, to feel, to reconnect. They lift us beyond the day-to-day and place us somewhere full of possibility, hope and imagination.

At Mayflower, we believe deeply in the power of those shared experiences. In a darkened auditorium, strangers become a community, united in wonder, emotion and joy. And when the curtain falls, we leave changed, even in the smallest way.

We know theatre may feel like a luxury, especially now. But it is also a lifeline, a spark in difficult times, and a place to dream.

‘We know that for many people right now, coming to the theatre may feel like a considered choice rather than a spontaneous one. But what happens inside our auditoriums is powerful. It’s a chance to pause, to escape, and to feel something deeply human. At Mayflower, we believe those moments of joy, reflection and connection aren’t just valuable, they’re vital. Theatre may be seen as a luxury, but its ability to uplift and inspire is something truly essential.’
