We’re doubling our toilets! A major upgrade is on the way at Mayflower Theatre

Plans are in place for Mayflower Theatre to undertake the most significant refurbishment of its toilet facilities in its 97-year history – doubling the provision for customers – as part of a £12.7m capital investment.

This work will be carried out in conjunction with the development of a new rehearsal space and replacement of the theatre’s “Grid” above the stage during summer 2026.

The toilet refurbishment project will increase total capacity from 43 to 62 cubicles (including 12 new universal facilities), reintroduction of urinals in male toilets, and 30 additional washbasins.

Michael Ockwell, Mayflower Chief Executive said,

‘We are thrilled that the Mayflower Theatre Trust Board approved a capital investment of over £12 million on the building works across the venue with the new rehearsal space, new grid and new WCs. With the challenges of running a Grade II listed building, we know that the toilet facilities have not been a great experience for our customers. This refurbishment will provide wonderful new facilities for many years to come.’

Matt Goode, Chief Operating Officer added,

‘The project will bring our toilets up to current building standards with larger cubicles, improved access, and new features to not only fit into the Art Deco heritage of the building but also to address the challenges faced with peak audience requirements.

We are also delighted to announce that we will be creating a new accessible toilet for customers located in the front stalls section of the auditorium. This is a much-needed improvement and will provide accessible facilities for customers without requiring them to leave the building. In addition to this we will continue to deliver on our inclusion and diversity agenda, and to be compliant with new legislation.’
