Great news! As part of our commitment to reducing our environmental impact, we’ve been looking for a more sustainable alternative choice to plastic bottled water for our customers. Introducing Cano Water – water in a resealable can.
Why cans?
Whilst plastic is recycled, it degrades in quality every time. Eventually, recycled plastic has degraded so much it has to be disposed of.
Aluminium doesn’t degrade in the same way resulting in a much longer lifespan; 75% of all the aluminium ever produced is still in use today! The packaging is also lighter than plastic, which means a lower carbon footprint to transport. It may not be much per can, but it all adds up.
We also realise that people don’t want to have an open container they’re worried about spilling. The Cano cans are all resealable so you can close them up like a bottle of water and focus on the show.
Why now?
We’ve just changed to mixed recycling bins. Cano cans have a metal body with a plastic resealing tab. Thanks to the change in our bins, the cans can now go straight in without the components needing to be separated first.
What Next?
We were recently really happy to hear that Smarties have replaced their plastic sweet bags with fully recyclable paper bags, so we’ve got these in right away. We hope this is a start of a broader change from the large confectionery companies and will continue to see where we can make changes.
We are dedicated to doing our part to meet the target we have set for ourself of Carbon Net Zero 2030. Sometimes, we’re limited by our nature as a Grade II Listed Building, but there’s no excuse not to do what we can, and with your help we believe we can make it. So, next time you are in our foyer, keep an eye out for Cano Water and when you are leaving, drop it off in a green recycling bin. Together, we can eliminate single use plastic bottles from our theatre.
