When audiences returned to Mayflower Theatre this autumn, they stepped into a venue ready for its next chapter.
Following more than £12 million of self-funded investment, we have completed a major programme of improvements to our historic Grade II-listed theatre. The work will help us welcome audiences, performers and visiting companies for many years to come.
Supporting the shows of tomorrow
While the theatre was closed over the summer, one of the most important changes was taking place high above the stage. The original grid, which had been supporting scenery, lighting and stage equipment since 1928, was replaced to ensure we can continue to host some of the world’s largest and most technically demanding touring productions.

A new space for creativity
Behind the scenes, we’ve also created a new double-height studio connected to the stage. This modern and accessible space will support visiting productions and open up new opportunities for us to create work with performers and our communities.
Joined by producer Michael Harrison for its official opening, our Chief Executive Michael Ockwell commented on the importance of this new space for Mayflower:
It is thrilling that we have been able to create a modern, high-performing space within a historic, working theatre. This new development gives Mayflower the facilities and flexibility we need to keep growing, while making sure accessibility, sustainability and the future of our theatre remain at the heart of what we do.

Improving our visitors’ experience
Some of the more noticeable changes can be found across our public spaces, including the most significant refurbishment of the theatre’s toilet facilities in its 98-year history.
Working closely with our heritage architects, we have improved accessibility while creating facilities that complement the character of the building. Our capacity has increased from 43 to 62 cubicles, including 12 new universal facilities, alongside 30 additional wash basins and the reintroduction of urinals in the male toilets.
Creating the best possible experience for our customers is at the heart of everything we do. As Mayflower Theatre approaches its centenary, this refurbishment demonstrates our commitment to investing in both our audiences and the long-term future of one of the country’s finest theatres.

Elsewhere, we have introduced a new Reception and Stage Door, additional accessible dressing rooms and improved connections between the theatre and our administration building. Together, these developments will provide a better environment for professional touring companies and support our Participation and Education programmes.
Ready for our next act
After 18 months of work, we are delighted to welcome audiences back to experience world-class theatre with the spectacular five-week run of Moulin Rouge! The Musical, which opened on 24 September and continues until 24 October 2026.
